Which LEGO Hogwarts set should you buy?

Updated
LEGO Hogwarts Castle: The Main Tower (76454) next to The Great Hall (76435)

We get asked this a lot, usually by someone buying for a Harry Potter fan and staring at a dozen boxes that all say "Hogwarts" on the front. Here's how I'd choose, based on the sets we actually have on the shelf.

It helps to know that in 2024 LEGO started a new Hogwarts Castle collection. The sets in it are designed to connect, so you can build the castle up a piece at a time. The older Hogwarts sets from 2019 to 2023 came before it and aren't part of it. Neither is better, but if you want things to join up, buy from the same collection.

The big one: Hogwarts Castle: The Main Tower (76454)

This is the big Hogwarts set from 2025. It has 2,135 pieces, stands over 67cm tall and comes with 12 minifigures, including Harry, Hermione, Neville, Dumbledore and Nearly Headless Nick, plus Fluffy, Hedwig and Fawkes.

It's one kids will actually play with, not just put on a shelf. There's a trapdoor down to Fluffy's room, Devil's Snare you can trigger, the flying keys and a Grand Staircase that swivels, with Dumbledore's office and the Mirror of Erised at the top. The rooms at the bottom lift out, which makes it easier for younger ones to get at.

LEGO sells it for £229.99. Ours is new and sealed at £157.99.

Buy it if: it's the main present, or you want one set that does the most.

The small one: Hogwarts Castle: Charms Class (76442)

204 pieces and three minifigures: Ron, Hermione and Professor Flitwick. It's the Wingardium Leviosa scene from the first film, with a feather you can levitate, desks that come out and a chalkboard of spells. The classroom folds open to play in.

It's part of the same collection as The Main Tower, so it's a cheap way in if you're planning to build the castle over time. LEGO sells it for £17.99. Ours is new and sealed at £14.99.

Buy it if: you want a stocking filler or a first Hogwarts set for a younger fan (it's aged 8+).

The one LEGO has stopped selling: The Great Hall (76435)

The Great Hall was the first big set in the collection: 1,732 pieces and 11 minifigures, including Quirrell and a mountain troll. LEGO stopped selling it in the UK in June 2026. It connects to The Main Tower, so a lot of people want both.

Retired. Ours has just sold. If you already have The Main Tower and want the two together, ask us to find you another. Sealed ones are getting harder to come by, and retired sets rarely get cheaper.

Older Hogwarts sets

These are all retired now, so the price depends on what's left out there. All of the ones below are new and sealed:

So which one?

  • Under £20, or a first set: Charms Class.
  • The main present for a big fan: The Main Tower.
  • They already have The Main Tower: The Great Hall, while there are still sealed ones about.
  • A favourite scene from the films: one of the older sets above.

The new collection also has 14 collectible Hogwarts portraits, and they come at random. The Main Tower includes 6, The Great Hall 5 and Charms Class 1, so you won't get a full set from these three alone.
